the even wilder thing is that i think this is pretty widespread; my father is a moderate white man in his 70s in oklahoma who has worked in oil and gas his entire career, and feels more or less the same, if not *quite* as strongly
a wild example of polarization in my own mind is that i now associate “republican” with “gigantic flaming asshole” and while i have never been remotely conservative, i did not always make personal judgments about people solely based on partisan affiliation
like, *most* of the people he's known in both his professional and personal lives have been republicans, but he's got no use for them now, either
a close family friend who was, i swear to god, normal 10-15 years ago (and an obama fan) is now the kind of guy who makes comments about the election being stolen on linkedin posts
a small thing that i appreciate about the trump era (while disliking it) is that it's forced a lot of clarification about who everyone is and what they believe and stand for
