Performances should stand apart from their films, but voters only practice that with… certain actors. Taylor Russell didn’t get in for WAVES bc the film was “divisive” (lol when has that ever stopped a white actor in a bad biopic). Now, #BonesAndAll is “too genre.” Etc etc etc.

taylor russell not being in the best actress conversation for bones and all makes it even more obvious that awards critics and voters only pay attention to black actresses in very specific roles, no matter how much the movie is acclaimed
Kathy Bates got in Best Supporting Actress ahead of Taylor Russell in 2019, and next to no one even *saw* RICHARD JEWELL, lol. And Olivia Colman is still considered a top Best Actress contender this year even though EMPIRE OF LIGHT is poorly received. There’s a theme here.
Sure, you can say those two women in particular also received a boost by being former winners and “big names,” so let’s look at other recent “lone Best Actress nominees” who all ultimately earned Oscar nominations despite their films being too “indie”/“divisive”/“genre” and… hm!
Yeah, it doesn’t help that #BonesAndAll is widely seen - and dismissed - as “the cannibal movie.” But we ALL know that’s not the only thing holding Taylor Russell back this year.
