This is how I believe Pep wants to play this season. Key points:
- Cancelo back at RB and becoming a regular starter. Will still see rotation there regularly.
- Cucurella coming in at LB and Wilson-Esbrand gets promoted.
- Phil Foden on the RW, but also available at LW.
- Pep ready to give Jack Grealish another chance as the main star at LW. Again, Phil Foden will play there too.
- Erling Haaland becomes the main striker, but Alvarez will also get plenty of chances
- Pep open to the idea of returning to the 3-5-2 formation sometimes
- I want to stress that we will see A LOT of rotation during the season due to the match schedule: Kyle Walker and Riyad Mahrez will play A LOT. Don’t you worry. Palmer will also get more minutes, and I also expect McAtee will get his chance in midfield (if he doesn’t leave)
To summarize, this is Pep’s preferred line-up going into the season:
Ederson;
Cancelo - Dias - Stones - Cucurella;
Rodri;
De Bruyne - Bernardo;
Phil Foden - Haaland - Grealish
I would also like to emphasize that we WON’T play the same way like we’ve done over the last 2 years when we had no strikers. With Haaland and Julian Alvarez, Pep has already confirmed that he will ADAPT his tactics to play them to their strengths: hence this preferred team

I believe that the potential signing of Marc Cucurella pretty much confirms what I’ve been saying: both wingers set to cut inside from their respective sides and become “striker 2” and “striker 3” next to Haaland in the box while Cancelo and Cucurella provide width and crosses
This is will also play Jack Grealish & Phil Foden to their strengths because they are 1) technically very good, 2) able to do amazing things when there’s not much room, 3) they have an eye for goal and assist and this will put them in those perfect goalscoring positions
