Today is #BiVisibilityDay 2021 ONS estimates put the prevalence of bisexuality at 1.1% of the UK population, rising to 5.3% of 16-24 year olds. We saw yesterday that attitudes to LGB people generally had improved, but here are some stats on bisexuality specifically (thread) 1/6

#BiVisibilityDay From reading Prof Michael Biggs’ paper on the history of puberty blockers we find that of the first 70 children on the “Dutch Protocol”, 8.6% were bisexual. One further child did not know their sexual orientation yet. twitter.com/ALLIANCELGB/st… 2/6

This new paper by Michael Biggs really drives home the root of our concerns with medicalising gender nonconformity. From 2000, of the first 70 adolescents to undergo the “Dutch Protocol” to block puberty, only one was heterosexual. #GayTeensArentSick twitter.com/transgendertrd…

#BiVisibilityDay Statistics on referrals to GIDS in a 2014 paper showed that 26% were bisexual. ONS estimates of bisexuality in 16-24 year olds in 2014 were only 1.3%, so referrals were roughly 20x higher than in the general population. researchgate.net/publication/26… 3/6

#BiVisibilityDay A 2021 follow-up study into boys referred for gender dysphoria in Canada found that 27.8% were bisexual. This study also found that in 87.8% of cases, the dysphoria resolved over time, without medicalisation. frontiersin.org/articles/10.33… 4/6

#BiVisibilityDay A 2021 study which surveyed detransitioners found that 23% were bisexual. However, a further 30% described themselves as pansexual or having multiple sexualities, so we don’t know for sure how many were both-sex attracted. link.springer.com/content/pdf/10… 5/6

And despite not being asked, 23% volunteered that struggling with their sexuality was a factor in their transition. So on this #BiVisibilityDay we question why so many of those ending up on a pathway leading to transition are bisexual. Because #BiTeensArentSick 6/6
