β„πŸƒβ„πŸƒβ„πŸƒ "So, is dad coming home? " Taehyung paused in the middle of folding his son's shirt, keeping his face neutral as he tried not to let his trepidation show in his body or his voice. "Why do you ask, darling? " He said cautiously giving Yeojun a smile.
"I heard some of the kids at school say that they were going to give dad a retrial. And if he's found not guilty, he'll be coming home again. " Taehyung swallowed. After Jungkook's arrest, he hadn't actually talked to Jun about the strain in their relationship.
He had hoped that with Jungkook away, and with the passage of time, hopefully he could , eventually and with great care, explain that they had made the choice to separate. But this whole appeal, retrial thing had thrown a jam in that particular plan of his. But
Taehyung wasn't going to do anything stupid. Like tell his thirteen year old son who loved his dad more than anything else, that he wasn't planning on letting him back into their house. That would be disastrous. So he smiled, soft and cautious. "Well, it's not set in stone."
He hesitated , because there was an eagerness in Yeojun's face, a look of hope there that he didn't really want to quash. "But, there's a very high probability that he will, yes." "So it will be like before. All three of us together? " Tae laughed a little.
"Well, let's just take it one day at a time yeah? The appeal is in a couple of days and we'll see how that goes. " Jun nodded. "Can we go? " Taehyung froze. "Go where? " "The courthouse. Can we go watch? " "Sweetheart.. " "Please." He bit his lips. " I miss him. "
Taehyung sighed deeply. The truth of it was, he missed him too. Well, certain parts of him, to be more precise. He liked the romantic, the sweet and generous parts of Jungkook. It was the power hungry, corrupt and manipulative side that made him wary of the man.
Because no matter what the courts or the judges said, after fifteen years of marriage, Taehyung knew that Jeon Jungkook, one of the most celebrated lawyers in the country, was far, far from innocent.
And young Taehyung, madly in love and filled with hero worship, had been okay with that part of Jungkook. Had even felt some kind of perverse attraction to that side of him but now, at thirty five, he wasn't a lovesick fool. He couldn't afford to be one.
"You know the media will be waiting for us There's nothing they want more than to stick a camera and a microphone on our faces and ask us terrible hurtful questions. And I don't want that for you, okay? It's important to me that they stay away from you. Please, understand, baby."
Yeojun kept his gaze on the floor for a few seconds. "You alright? " Taehyung asked carefully and Jun sighed. "Was it true that he did bad things? " He asked quietly. Taehyung blinked at that. It was a loaded question and he had no idea how he could answer.
"No." He said finally, closing his eyes. "Your father...he wanted to help people and he made enemies in the process. But, no he didn't set out to do bad things and he most certainly didn't deserve to go to prison for any of the things he did do." Jun nodded. "Okay."
Taehyung dropped the clothes and walked over to his son, tugging him into a hug. "Whatever happens, we're going to get through it together. Okay?" "All three of us." Yeojun said at once. " Together. Right?" Oh, brother.
πŸƒβ„οΈπŸƒβ„οΈ
Jungkook knew he was going to be getting out, of course he did , but that didn't really stop him from feeling a huge amount of relief when the judge pronounced him not guilty at the end of his retrial. Because yes, he had made sure of it but one could never be certain.
As he stepped out of the court, right next to his jubilant attorney, Jungkook couldn't help but flash the crowd of reporters and the general public a wide, winning smile. They were vultures most of them, looking to feast on his downfall or his victory. It wouldn't matter to them
either way. But he was willing to indulge them a little. He even paused by one of the reporter who immediately jumped at the opportunity, sticking a microphone near his mouth.
"So, Mr. Jeon. Now that you've been cleared of all charges, what's the first thing you're gonna do?" Jungkook smiled at that. Now, he knew exactly what he could say to make them eat it all up. "Get my husband back." he said firmly. "Prison was lonely."
There was a series of catcalls and whistles at that. "Mr.Jeon is it true that your husband has found comfort with your best friend, during your incarceration? " Someone yelled and Jungkook stiffened at that. Who the fuck.. His eyes met a smug face, three feet away.
He gave the reporter an even smile. "My best friend happens to be my son, Yeojun so I'm sure they kept each other company while I was away. But, " He turned back to the crowd. " Now that I'm here I'm going to prioritize them and we're going to rebuild our family."
πŸƒβ„πŸƒβ„πŸƒ Jimin turned the television off, swearing under his breath before turning to the man on his couch. "They're eating it all up, the prodigal son returns and receives a hero's welcome. " He muttered. Taehyung looked pale as a sheet.
"I just..." he closed his eyes. " We haven't spoken in nearly a year. I don't know what to say or do." he whispered. "He hasn't tried contacting you ?" Jimin looked surprised. Tae sighed. "Of course he has. I didn't take any of his calls." he sighed. " Only Jun spoke with him."
Jimin hesitated. "Did you tell him you're looking to...end things?" Taehyung nodded, short and curt. "Yes, but you know Jungkook. He only hears what he wants to hear. When I tell him I'm unhappy, he only hears, ' i want you to try harder'. " "Isn't that a good thing?"
"Him trying harder? " Taehyung shook his head briskly. " It's not. Not when it's a few years too late and not when I'm already halfway out of this relationship." He sighed. " He's not the guy I married. Or the guy I fell in love with. He's... Not what I want anymore. "
Jimin moved to settle on the couch next to him, reaching out and lightly squeezing his hand. "Hey. " He said softly. " I'm here for you if you need help okay? If you want to move out, there's an extra room in my apartment. Anytime you want. " Tae groaned.
"Yeah, that would go down well. Me moving in with my husband's best friend a day after his release. " He shook his head. " I have to do this right. I have to make sure that I protect the one person who is innocent in all of this : my son. And right now, he wants his dad back. "
Taehyung peered around the hallway at the small balcony that looked onto the street in front of their apartment. Jun was leaning against the railing staring at the cars, waiting for the one that would bring Jungkook back. "He needs normalcy. At least for a while. "
"Your needs matter too. " Jimin whispered, before rubbing his thumb lightly on the back of his hand. Taehyung allowed the touch for a second, maybe two, before pulling away. Jimin sighed. "Taehyung... " "I can't. " He said sharply. " We can't. You... You need to stop. "
"You give him too much power over your decisions. " Jimin said sharply. " Everything in your life is done keeping Jungkook in mind. Every single choice is somehow dependent on what he thinks. You're an adult. You can do things that you want. You can be with whoever you want. "
Taehyung turned to look at him. "If you're so eager to be with me, why would you work so damn hard to get him out of prison? " He said sharply. Jimin stared at him evenly. "I didn't get him out. He got out because he's innocent. " Taehyung scoffed. "Innocent? "
"Is there such a thing as an innocent lawyer? " He demanded. "Yes." Jimin said quietly. " A lawyer who knows the law. Who knows how to use it, who knows how to wield it the right way... He isn't a criminal. Here's just a really good fucking lawyer. And Jungkook is one. "
Taehyung shook his head turning away but Jimin grabbed his arm. "Hey. I'm not saying that there's perfect justice in the world. I'm just saying sometimes things go bad even in a courtroom and that's not the fault of the lawyer , it's the law you should be mad at. "
Taehyung tugged his arm away. "Besides the corruption charges were bogus. They wanted to cover up a lot of things and his case was a distraction. I'm sure of it. " "Cover up what? " "That's what I'm going to find out. " Jimin said firmly. "Dad! Dad's here! "
Taehyung flinched. "Showtime." He whispered. πŸƒβ„πŸƒβ„πŸƒ
β€œNo reporters anywhere near my home. No one goes near my son or my husband.” β€œYes, Mr. Jeon.” Jungkook watched the elevator display change to his floor. When the doors slid open , a tiny figure barrelled right into his arms, wrapping both arms around him in a desperate hug.
β€œDad!” Yeojun’s voice was muffled against Jungkook’s shirt, and Jungkook closed his eyes, savouring the warmth of his son’s body against his own. Oh, he had missed this. He blinked up at the men standing by the doorway to the apartment and his eyes finally landed on Taehyung.
He hadn’t seen Tae in a long time and for a few seconds, he just let himself stare. From the day they met, this had been one of his favourite things to do. Just looking at his gorgeous husband.
And Taehyung looked like he had lost weight, but otherwise he fairly glowed with beauty. His eyes didn’t carry the love they once held , that was true. But that was something that could be dealt with. He had made Kim Taehyung fall for him once. He could certainly do it again.
β€œJungkook ah…” Jimin’s voice made him turn and he finally looked at his best friend. When Jungkook was arrested he had asked Jimin to take care of Taehyung. And from what he had heard, his best friend had certainly kept his end of the deal.
Maybe a bit more diligently than Jungkook liked, but again, that was also something that could be dealt with. For now, he would savor the moment of finally reuniting with his family. He pressed a kiss to the top of Yeojun's head and hugged him tighter.
And then he held an arm out, staring right at Taehyung. "Hey, baby." he smiled, baring his teeth just a little. " Missed me?" πŸƒβ„οΈπŸƒβ„οΈπŸƒ
Taehyung lay on the bed, covers pulled up right to his neck. He stared up at the ceiling, ears tuned into the sound of whispered conversation in the room next door. Jungkook was there , talking to Jun. The young boy had a lot to say to his father and for all his
shortcomings as a husband, Jungkook was still a very good father. It was another ten minutes before the conversations finally faded away. Another two minutes after that, the doorway to his bedroom opened and Jungkook stepped in, carefully locking the room behind him.
"I don't remember..." He said quietly, " him being such a talker." Despite himself, Taehyung smiled. "He missed you." he said quietly. Jungkook's face relaxed into a smile. "I missed him too. Immensely." he stood leaning against the door merely watching him.
Taehyung had watched Jungkook argue cases enough times to know that he didn't stand a chance if his husband used his courtroom tactics on a personal conversation. So he sat up, leaning against the headboard and folding his arms over his chest. "We need to talk." he said quietly.
"Yes," Jungkook smiled, " Let's talk. Starting with me. Are you fucking my best friend?" Taehyung felt his heart skip a beat but he didn't let it show on his face. "No." he said honestly. " Are you going to listen to me? And actually hear what I'm trying to say?"
"Depends." Jungkook shrugged. " Are you going to talk about ending things instead of mending them?" Taehyung chuckled, shaking his head. "I don't love you anymore." he said shakily. "Ah." Jungkook hummed, pushing away from the door and slipping his hands into his pockets." Pity."
"Pity?" Taehyung snapped. " That's all you have to say?" Jungkook shrugged, the gesture casual and unworried. "Yes. Pity you don't understand that it isn't really a deal breaker for me. You falling out of love. Because you see, you do love me. You can't not love me."
"Jungkook ..." "In fact, I think most of your frustration with me, stems from the fact that, despite the things I do, its impossible for you to not love me." Taehyung closed his eyes. "Okay." He sighed. " I accept that. you're right. I do care about you, but I don't want this."
"Define this." Jungkook said quietly. "What? " "When you say you don't want this, what exactly are you referring to? Be more specific. " "Don't treat me like I'm one of the witnesses you're questioning. " "Consider it prep for our divorce proceedings. Answer me. "
Taehyung stared at the man in disbelief, shaking his head. "This is exactly what I meant. This thing where you treat every single conversation like a court case you need to win and come on top of." "Thought you liked me on top." Taehyung felt the heat rise up his face.
"Our marriage." he snapped. " The way you did things, the way you treated me..." "Define treated." "Jungkook for the love of-" "Did I ever neglect you?" he demanded. Taehyung stared. "No." He sighed, looking away. "Did i ever raise a hand, or use abusive language of any kind?"
"No, you did not." "Did I ever make you feel like you weren't a priority?" He continued. "Jungkook can you just..." "Did I fucking cheat on you?" "No, you didn't." "No, I fucking didn't . You know why? Because I fucking love you, Tae, that's why." He snapped.
Taehyung closed his eyes, taking a deep breath wrapping his arms around himself. He felt the mattress sink near his thighs and blinked up at his husband, sitting by his side and looking stricken. "You know what I did in prison Taehyung? I spent all my time thinking. "
"Thinking about how I went wrong. Thinking about the things I would have done differently. Thinking about how I could have protected you and Jun better. Thinking of a way, any fucking way to get back to you and our son. To hold you again in my arms. That's all I thought of. "
He narrowed his eyes. "I was thinking and wondering how I could make this right. But then ," He reached for his phone and flipped through his folder, before tossing it at Taehyung's lap. Taehyung stared at the picture, eyes wide. It was him and Jimin holding hands and smiling.
"You know what I didn't have fun doing? I didn't have fun wondering if my best friend was sticking his dick inside my fucking husband. "
Taehyung felt his hands and feet grow a bit cold at that. "Those aren't... It isn't what it looks like. " He whispered. "So you do realize what it looks like? " Jungkook demanded. "You realize what people thought when they saw this? " Taehyung bit his lips.
" I didn't sleep with him. " "But you did everything else. " He snapped. " You held his hand, you looked into his eyes, you smiled at him the way you're only supposed to be smiling at me. You did all of that but yeah, you didn't get dirty under the sheets so it's fine, right? "
Taehyung didn't respond, gripping the sheets. "You sit there, on your moral high horse, judging me for using the technicalities in the law to get away with something that may be morally wrong, but... " He tapped the photo, " Here you are doing the exact same thing. "
Taehyung stared at him, eyes wide. His lips wobbled a bit and his eyes brimmed with tears. "I hate you. " He whispered. "You love me. " Jungkook said softly, " You could never hate me. You know why? " He smiled, holding the phone up. " Because you and I, we're exactly the same"
β„οΈπŸƒβ„οΈπŸƒβ„οΈ
Taehyung stood in front of the mirror, fixing the collar of his shirt and smoothing his hand over his chest, letting the fabric fall into place, neat and crisp over his torso. He used the fine end of his comb to lightly fix his curls, before rubbing his thumb over his lips.
Some of the gloss came off his lips, and he wiped it down on a tissue before grabbing the eyeliner, lightly running it along his waterline. It had been a while since he dressed up and he was a little rusty, but overall he thought he looked pretty good. "Are you going to see dad?"
Taehyung glanced up at the reflection, catching sight of Yeojun leaning against the door frame, staring at him. Taehyung smiled a little, placing the liner down and turning away from the vanity, holding an arm out for Yeojun. His sone rushed in, giving him a half hug.
"Yes, I am. He's working late at the office so, I'm going to go feed him."he smiled. Yeojun looked hesitant. "Are you leaving him?" He asked, a worried look on his face. Taehyung frowned. "Why do you ask that?" "Just kids at school..." he hesitated." They say you cheated on him."
"Well, kids at school just like talking." Taehyung said easily. " They don't really know me or your father." "You didn't , right?" "No." Taehyung said firmly. " I didn't. And your father didn't do anything wrong either. I want you to remember that alright?" He nodded.
Sighing, Taehyung hugged him tighter. "Listen, your dad's an important man. And I'll be honest, okay? I did wonder, for a small while...if maybe ...it would be better for us to take a small break from each other...and see...if we feel better going our own separate ways."
"But, since then..." he smiled," I've changed my mind. Your father and I we're... We're going to try and make this work. Okay?" "You do love him, right?" "Of course I do. But I love you more. And I would do anything for you. Do you believe that?" "I do." "Good." he kissed him.
"You have soccer?" He asked gently, running a hand through his hair. Yeojun nodded. "Yeah, Soobin's mom is gonna drive us there." "That's great. And you'll be heading over to stay with him for the night?" "Yeah." Yeojun pulled away, already turning. "Okay, have fun. I love you."
Yeojun was already out of the door and Taehyung stared after him, his heart aching and swelling with a fondness that was almost debilitating in its intensity. If anyone were to ask what Taehyung's biggest weakness was, it would be his son. Jun was everything to him.
And for him, he was usually willing to give up a lot of things. Anything in fact. He played with the ring on his finger. It was solid gold, carved with a small JK and with a small diamond on the side. He ran his finger over the inscription. He hadn't taken it off in a long time.
πŸƒβ„οΈπŸƒβ„οΈπŸƒ
"Mr. Jeon, you husband is here to see you." His secretary said quietly, sticking his head in through a small opening in the door. Jungkook looked up from where he was going over a few notes, genuinely surprised. "Send him in." he said quickly, already setting his work aside.
When Taehyung stepped into the office, he couldn't help but stare. He looked even more beautiful than usual and Jungkook wondered what the occasion was, because Taehyung didn't really enjoy decking himself up for any reason. "Tae?" he said cautiously," What's up?"
Taehyung took a deep breath, walking over to the desk that separated them, before licking his lips. Jungkook watched as his husband carefully placed two things on the desk. One was a pendrive and the other was the ring Jungkook had slipped onto his fingers , years ago.
Jungkook felt his heart turn over. "Taehyung what the fuck is this?" he said harshly. "Language." Taehyung said quietly. " You know Jungkook, just because I'm not a lawyer, it doesn't mean I can't negotiate. So, that's what I'm here for. To negotiate." "About ?" "Our marriage."
Jungkook hummed, staring at the pendrive. "What's in there?" he asked casually. Taehyung gently puled the chair out, and settled into it. "Stuff that could send you right back to prison." HE said without missing a beat. Jungkook blinked, before laughing out loud.
"Is that so?" he asked softly. " Interesting. Continue." "Aren't you going to ask me what's in there?" Taehyung frowned. Jungkook shrugged. "I have a pretty good idea what it is." He shrugged. "So let's skip over the unpleasantness." Taehyung swallowed.
" If you agree to my conditions." He said quietly, " I'll take the wedding ring, and leave the pendrive here. If you don't, you can keep the ring and I'll be taking the pendrive down to the press."
Jungkook whistled at that, leaning back against the plush seat of his chair, playing with his tie, all while watching him with an amused smirk on his face. There was a playful indulgence there that made Taehyung feel small and defenseless. "Very dramatic." Jungkook nodded.
"And what else?" he prompted. "First, you open a trust fund for Yeojun. The money there remains untouched no matter what happens between you and me." "I did that when he was five years old. What else?" Jungkook leaned over. "What?" Taehyung blinked. "You need the details?"
Taehyung hesitated before nodding. "Yes, I would like the one." "You're the trustee. If our marriage does end I'd hand over full control of it to you. Seeing as you are the one who spends the most time with him." Taehyung bit his lips. "Okay." "So what else?"
"I want to start modeling again." Tae said quietly. Jungkook's smile faded a bit. "Modeling?" "That's right." "I see." He hummed thoughtfully, looking out to the side. "What?" Tae snapped. "I'm wondering what is worse, being in prison or sending you back to that literal cesspool."
Taehyung glared at him. "You met me when I was a model." he snapped. "Yes, and you were the only reason I was willing to wade through that world." "So what, am I not a good enough reason anymore?" Taehyung snapped. Jungkook smiled. "Of course you are. Fine. Done."
" I didn't cheat on you. I want you to stop implying that." "You didn't go on cute little dates? Didn't talk to him about me?" Jungkook asked casually. Tae glared at him. "He was the only one there after you did what you did." He snapped. " I... was lonely I needed a friend."
"You know there are other pictures of you two." Jungkook leaned in. " pictures that I could take to the press and end your modeling career before it even begins."
It was only a little gratifying, Jungkook thought, watching the blood drain from Taehyung's face. He smiled. "I won't don't worry." He said softly." Because I love you. And you know what that means?" he leaned in," I'm willing to forgive it all. Under one condition."
"What pictures?!" Taehyung demanded. "There can't be any pictures, I never did anything." "The only way you'll be seeing those pictures, if ever, would be on the gossip columns. But we don't have to go there. Now, are you ready to hear my condition?" Taehyung swallowed. "What?"
"If you choose to end this marriage, I get full custody of Yeojun."
Taehyung stared at him in disbelief. "You..."He exhaled , " How could you-" "With a lot of difficulty actually." He said softly." Because trust me, I don't want to. But like you, I would also want to protect my interests. Your interest is your career and money. Mine is my son."
Taehyung shook his head in disbelief. "You're despicable." Jungkook blinked wide eyes at him. "Is that so? So you don't agree?" Taehyung swallowed. He stared at the table for a few seconds and then stood up. Jungkook watched as he wrapped his arms around himself.
"Jun's soccer practice ends at six." he said quietly, his voice shaking a little. " Go pick him up." Jungkook grinned. "Of course I will darling. And you're all dressed up. Are you going to see your agent?" Taehyung frowned. "How did you know?" He demanded.
"Just an educated guess." He shrugged, before reaching for his draw and pulling out a small card. "This is a friend of mine. H works exclusively with models making a comeback . One of the best in the industry. Give him a call. You'll be on a billboard by the end of the month."
Taehyung watched him for a second before taking the card and turning away. He began walking away. "Hang on, baby..." Jungkook called out and he paused. As he watched Jungkook came over to him, smiling wide as he reached for his hand. "You forgot something." the lawyer said.
Taehyung watched as he carefully slid the wedding ring back onto his finger, before raising it up to kiss the metal coldness. Taehyung swallowed, as Jungkook pulled back, only to lean over and gently cup his face, slotting his lips over Taehyung's.
Muscle memory along with the warmth of Jungkook's body and the intoxicating scent of his cologne made him melt for a second and his eyes fluttered shut. Jungkook pulled away after a second, only to lightly kiss the skin near his ears. "Don't ever take it off again." he whispered.
πŸƒβ„οΈπŸƒ
"So, did it work?" Jimin asked carefully, leaning over the railing of the balcony, watching the Seoul skyline in the setting sun. " He agreed to the conditions?"
Jungkook smiled, eyes bright as he watched over the city, hands curled around a glass of whiskey, gaze taking in the towering skyscrapers and flashing lights. So much life here in the city, so many people, so much power buzzing , just his for the taking. "He did."
Jimin hummed at that. "Good." he said firmly."You're going to have to need him by your side, when you run for office." Jungkook hummed. "I know, I know... nothing worse than a divorced candidate when it comes to politics." he took a sip and grimaced. " This whiskey tastes awful."
Jimin reached out and took the glass from him, placing it on the table before moving to the small sidebar in the corner, picking Jungkook's favorite whiskey in its stead. "What would you have done if he didn't agree? You would have really gone for solo custody?"
Jungkook smiled a bit at that. "What do you think I would have done?" He retorted. Jimin shrugged, returning with another glass. "Quit your job and gone after him most likely." he shrugged. " You can't live without him." "Well, i suppose that's possible.
"Thankfully," Jungkook smiled, holding his glass up. " We don't have to ever find out." Jimin chuckled before clinking their glasses together. As they took a drink, Jimin leaned in. "So, what was in the pendrive?" Jungkook glanced at his friend. He laughed, shaking his head.
πŸŒΏβ„οΈπŸŒΏβ„οΈThe End.
Author's note : I enjoyed writing this immensely. Mainly because its rare to read fics that keep the morally ambiguous tags right up to the end. But its my favorite genre to write.
There's a lot of questions left unanswered and that is intentional. Was there actual incriminating evidence there? Would Taehyung have gone to the press? Truly? Did Jungkook ask Jimin to get close to Taehyung? Did Taehyung really develop feelings for Jimin?
We have two unreliable narrators here, also intentional. Taehyung who claims he never cheated : Jungkook who says he has photographic evidence that says otherwise. Jimin who seems to be on Jungkook's side. But who's to say he isnt the one who gave Taehyung that pendrive?
Finally, Taehyung. Most of his character is cautious . But here's a few clues : Taehyung has been with Jungkook for years. and He's very careful because he knows how manipulative Jungkook can be. One can even say he seems to be on survival mode.
There's the implication that Jungkook was the model husband atleast on the outside. But Taehyung is wary of him because the most perfect husbands can still be dangerous.
There's a helplessness that comes from being married to someone who is in a position of power. Taehyung had been looking for a way out of the marriage for a long time. With Jungkook in prison he thinks this is the way out, but then....
