That’s right you have to believe in it because it’s part of your dogma. As far as I can tell a historian would only be able to infer that this mystery lost text called the Injil is only mentioned in Islamic sources dated to the 7th or later centuries.
This is very interesting. Often recently Muslims have a hypothesis of a phantom Torah and Gospel that was revealed and largely lost with the death of Moses’s and Jesus’s first communities. This is not something that the Quran seems to present.
This is one of the first times I am hearing that there might be a phantom injeel (that authentically preserved Jesus’s messages) and was operating in Arabia during the period of Islamic emergence. This is a very hard thing to believe tbh imo
Regardless, early Muslim communities had a very different understanding of tahrif of the texts than later commentators. I think the question of what the Quran thinks the torah and injeel (along with scrolls of abraham, zabur, etc.) is super interesting.
Perhaps the singular injeel the Quran is speaking about is something like the diatessaron? Tbh tho it’s just a guess. we might really never know what the Quran has in mind when talking about these texts
