1/6 Eli, please tell me that YOU do not think CO2 which was FORMERLY in the air STILL has a warming effect!
I was SURE you are smarter than THAT!
Any two steadily increasing quantities correlate nicely. That doesn't mean one causes the other, of course.

2/6 Our CO2 emission rate is currently about twice the rate natural sinks (terrestrial greening, ocean uptake, etc.) remove CO2. But it's mere coincidence the ratio has been near 2:1 for a quite a while. If we halved CO2 emissions the ratio would be 1:1.

5/6ใAs a chemist, you surely know that The Ghost of CO2 Past does not haunt the atmosphere, continuing to warm the Earth long after the CO2 has been removed from the air and sequestered in other carbon reservoirs.

3/6 Coincidentally, for several decades the trend in CO2 concentration has been about half of the trend in "cumulative emissions."
But if we were to halve emissions that correlation would disappear entirely. Cumulative emissions would continue to rise, but CO2 level would not.
4/6 If we were to cut our emissions by 2/3, the two would be inversely correlated, because cumulative emissions would continue to rise, even as atmospheric CO2 level would be falling.
5/6 Only GHGs still in the air have ANY warming effect. Do you understand that?
The reason "cumulative emissions" are currently correlated with temperatures is simply that they've both been going up. Do you think the correlation implies causation?
