This one scratches the itch that Spy X Family was SUPPOSED to scratch. The world's greatest assassins are after the elite children at Youchien Noir, meanwhile MC Rita wants to meet a cute guy and fall in love... but guys can be so disappointing.

Villainess otome games are by now a "trope commons", part of a larger Shoujo narrative tradition. Here is some Showa era lore on blonde hair 'drills'.

In a classic 'otome' fantasy game, the overpowered commoner heroine (the player) must romance one of a number of hot guys (a route), while the adversary/ Villainess &co. relentlessly bully her. The Villainess will try everything to impede her. In-face-at-max!

Played right, our heroine avoids/ endures the bullying, wins the heart of the lad de jour, the villainess is cast down, MC marries into aristocracy, good ending. Restart game, romance next pretty boy, repeat.

Rae Taylor (Rei Ohashi) is having none of it. She's -obsessed- with villainess Claire and since their interaction is inevitable, she's gonna work it for all the squeeee she can get. Also, ignore, even get on the -meh- side of the lads. Who needs'em!

A genre-savy Japanese audience GETS the set-up. JP pop narratives seldom [repeat everything important 3 times in 3 different contexts], as expected by certain outlander audiences...

Rae -might seem- as CREEPY CREEPY CREEPY during the first 2 eps, but heh, Villainess Claire is compelled [by game mechanics/narrative geas] to seek out and bully Ray. "Hey cute villainess lady, betcha didn't expect this!"

This begs a deeper, vexing issue: managing the transition of the beloved from game character to beloved-as-individual within a new, yet real world. Rei was only ever obsessed with Claire as game character. As well, Rei is now a 'tank', loaded with cheat powers and foreknowledge.

Ray can forthrightly: "Gay yup, gender matters". The only cheat NOT afforded, is that the gay is not a casual "oh yeah, some nobles are like that, NBD" in her new world. It's still "straight girls, smh, disappointment expected, will support her, settle for stay by her side".

That doesn't mean that Ray/Rei will give up easily. Much Villainess Claire must be investigated.

Weaksauce moi- I tried Vol1 of the light novels a few years back but the stalker vibe hit too hard and I put it aside mid-read. I missed a few things, like the 'pure love' that is slowly building. Game's afoot! Let's see how the anime handles it. KEEP WATCHING!

I was gonna pass on The Apothecary Diaries anime because CN history court grinders are not my thing; I rank them lower than isekai. But I cold watched an episode and decided to give it a chance.

The best of it is the protrag Maomao; hard-ass lead young woman chara, the titular apothecary kidnapped from her slum herb grinding shop to serve the imperial "harem" compound. Much consorts & ladies-in-waiting fights and poisonings - the latter which our heroine finds exciting.

Also the head eunuch (who might not be) and will eventually develop into a 9+ volume light novel slow, slow, slow burn. Yup, I snagged the light novels: a senior blogger on this site highly recommends them, I though why not?

Both are -diverting enough- even when there is something... uh... missing? It often feels like there is only half a there, there. This of course is a feature rather than a bug if you plan a multi-volume light novel series; spin out the tale to 20+ volumes!

The atmospherics and characters are well defined and the inter-character dynamics are just complex enough to interest, without jumping the shark (except for vol9's pretty boy misbehavior) So, yeah: probably be an entertaining 12 episodes that could easily do 1-3 more seasons...

...without getting anywhere in particular. Except that Maomao continues to slowly level up.

UNDEAD UNLUCK is (unfortunately) "Shonen-ing Out". Once our heroes join the MIB-thang, the plot goes Shonen Jump linear. Western Zombie Town is still funny but ho-hum.

I'm not against a linear narrative. FRIEREN is going to retrace the path of her 10year quest with the hero party (and kill any demons she runs into along the way). That's a given; travelling with "the next generation" while indulging memories is the meat of the story.

A popular franchise -needs- mechanics to drag the adventure out over several 40 chapter arcs that can also suffer hiatus/ cancellation at any time with the inevitable "Our battle continues". Or you can embrace chaos. Black Clover is fun but it will never be Gintama.
