A Turkish official tells me: • Blinken asked us to convey a message to Iran that their retaliation must be limited. • Iran in response said that their retaliation would be a response to the attack on Iranian Embassy in Damascus and it won’t go beyond that. • Turkey was informed of the attack in advance. No one was caught off guard.

NEW: Turkey’s Fidan talks to Blinken this afternoon, pointing out that Turkey has repeatedly said that since the beginning of the crisis in Gaza, it carries the risk of turning into a regional conflict. “Stating that the war in Gaza lies at the root of the problem, Minister Fidan reminded that a ceasefire should be declared urgently and uninterrupted humanitarian aid should be delivered to Gaza, otherwise the crisis will continue to grow. He stated that countries that have influence on Israel should give the most accurate messages to prevent tensions from escalating.”
