BREAKING: the world's most conservative scientists have changed their minds and now say they agree species like humans face catastrophically extreme global ecological and climate chaos impacts that will be beyond our ability to adapt within 15 years - give or take a decade 🧵

The most comprehensive extinction forecast of 15- 37 or even 50% of species wiped out by mid-century is likely too conservative. Biodiversity destruction during capitalism is worse than ever. Now the most cautious climate scientists expect 2°C by the 2040s.carbonbrief.org/analysis-what-
We've known for years we can't adapt after 1.5/2°C. The IPCC caught up in 2022. Mass media journalists? Silent. State-corporate media won't even mention climate change or fossil fuels when reporting climate chaos. Biodiversity? Extinction? Hardly a word. carbonbrief.org/in-depth-qa-th
Industrial agriculture (including industrial animal agriculture) and industrial ocean-emptying/wrecking (aka fishing) are key causes of rapid extinction. Logging, road-building, plastic pollution... the list is very long. Change the system. See thread: x.com/ClimateBen/sta

The most comprehensive extinction forecast of 15% - 37%, or even as much as 50% of all Earth's species committed to extinction by 2050 is likely an underestimate according to recent research. 🧵

2°C impacts are far more extreme than previously expected making adaptation impossible. Warming is accelerating. We're heading for 3 or 4°C, not 2.5°C. Climate sensitivity and feedbacks are about physical reality, not luck. Warming can increase 0.5°C when/if emissions stop.🧵
2C extremes are hell: “The bad news.. is that we have been ‘systematically underestimating the rate and magnitude of extremes.’ Even if temperature rise is limited to 2 degrees, she says, ‘the extremes might be what you would have projected for 4 to 5’.” nytimes.com/interactive/20
Even impacts when hitting 2°C for the first time over 12 months will be horrific. The few scientists projecting 1.5°C in 2100 know we're hitting 1.63°C now for the first time and that the trend is 0.26- 0.42°C or more per decade. They anticipate overshoot. theguardian.com/environment/ar

Which scientists told him this? ⬇️What did they study? Science fiction? Just to make it clear, yes, the rich have to give up their high energy consumptive and wasteful life style. That’s what the science I and thousands of other @IPCC scientists assessed says.
