Thread: Japanese historian Hirayama Yu, who has written over a dozen books on the Sengoku period and served as historical advisor for movies and dramas set in that time period, is going viral after weighing in on the Yasuke controversy, arguing that Yasuke was a samurai. 1/3
Unlike Thomas Lockley, Hirayama is a Japanese historian who specializes in the research of the historical period in which Nobunaga and Yasuke lived. He argued that a lack of a surname does not disprove samurai status. 2/3 https://x.com/HIRAYAMAYUUKAIN/status/1814539128245252589…
Over the last few hours Hirayama replied to various Twitter users who were not historians, arguing that their understanding of historical records was mistaken. He said that, based on what was written around that time, Yasuke can't be dismissed as just a servant or porter. 3/3
I will add: I am not an expert on this historical period. I research and write about modern/contemporary Japan. I'm sharing this because it's the first time I've seen a respected Japanese expert on this specific historical period weigh in on the online controversy over Yasuke.
