It is no accident that the optics of this produce a small wave of disgust and revulsion. It is impossible to close your eyes to the paedophilic overtones of the framing of the picture. In what aspect of Catholicism is there any indication that it is right to surrender the power to transform to promote (“the pop culture so beloved of ‘our’ youth”) self-indulgence, hedonism, chaos and rebellion? The vacant eyes of the mascot are marginally less frightening than the veiled eyes of the Archbishop.

The Vatican has unveiled the official mascot of the Holy Year 2025: Luce (Italian for Light). Archbishop Fisichella says the mascot was inspired by the Church's desire "to live even within the pop culture so beloved by our youth."
