He lost a degree of trust from the Kremlin after his fuzzy reaction to the failed Prigozhin coup attempt (he was the guy joking with Prigozhin while negotiating an end to his march on Moscow). Rumours of his pending purge circulated, yet he had remained core to the war effort.

I first came across Alexeev in connection with the shootdown of #MH17. In multiple calls intercepted by Ukraine, RU paramilitaries who had transported the BUK weapon back into a Russia referred to a mysterious call-sign "Stepanych". It took us a couple years to identify him as Alexeev

Later in 2020, Ukraine's GUR conducted an incredible sting operation in which they fake-recruitee thousands of idling Russian mercenaries into a non-existing "Russian PMC". Some of them bragged to being part of the BUK e filtration team. Sent by...Stepanych
