One year with Umamusume, you goofy gigabyte-guzzling gacha. What I thought would be a week-long tango just to get my mind off things has kept my head above water during an otherwise miserable year. I did a run with my fav to celebrate and Winning Ticket won a winning ticket (1/?)

366 days logged into Umamusume, a perfect year streak counting July 9th of both this year and last year.
Winning Ticket during her Hot Spring Getaway event saying 'Aww, look at us, how car we've finally come... Sniff...'
I've definitely yakked about this before but my time as a volunteer composer for a game I loved came to an end a year and a day ago. I've had kind of a cushy life so it's the closest thing I've felt to straight-up grief. It was not only mentally but physically painful
Umamusume hit Global and was going crazy so it was all over my timeline. Desperate for something to numb the pain, I gave it a try. Keep in mind I have never been into gacha games, horse racing, or the "what-if-X-was-girls" genre. I thought Umamusume looked stupid as hell!
Me saying 'Life has me downloading the horse game' in a Discord server exactly a year ago. My good buddy @RunningRoyalArt says 'might be good for you!!' but IDK.
Boom, I am smitten by Haru Urara. Boom, I pull the funny scientist horse and pop off like she's a 3 star. Boom, I am enamored by not only how silly Gold Ship but how her world lets her act that way. I know these are total normie characters, but many of us started like that!
Bluesky post that reads 'I've only known Haru Urara for a day but if anything bad happens to her I will kill everyone in this room and then myself'
It's a month in and I'm getting familiar with more of the cast. Then I stumble across one particular Winning Ticket and everything goes to hell. I love her energy and even realize her voice kinda sounds like mine as a kid. I decide to give her career a spin.
Discord message reading 'I might have a new favorite Uma.' My sole evidence is a sped-up GIF of Winning Ticket crying. It has one applause reaction.
I get pretty far! I gas out on the senior Arima Kinen as usual, but something about her seems like it's gonna work out. More than that, I see myself in her. She reminds me of the more intense and overbearing parts of myself in a way I haven't seen before. She's my new fav, free.
It's clear I'm in this for the long run now. I'm trying out every single character's career and never making it to the URA Finals. I finally find my own winning ticket- simply doing an uma who does not need to do the Arima Kinen- and make it to the URA Finale with King Halo!
Discord message saying 'I did just make it to the URA for the first time though' with a screenshot of King Halo training for the URA Finale Qualifier. Spoilers: I did not make it past the semifinals.
The story is why I've stuck around so long, however. The characters, the stories, and the constant theme of achieving your dreams and letting nothing stop you speaks to me during my turbulent time. I've been doing the main story, but I can't seem to beat chapter 2!
And most frustrating of all is what's waiting for me behind that door; chapter 3, featuring Winning Ticket as the protagonist. I grind and grind and grind until FINALLY, I win my first URA Finale with Grass Wonder and use that same Grass Wonder to beat chapter 2!
Discord message showing my first URA Finale win with Grass Wonder. I mention that 'I think she can free Tickezo from Gay Baby Jail.'
Discord message reading 'GRASS WONDER FREES BABYGIRL FROM HER ETERNAL PRISON BY A LANDSLIDE! SHE RAN FOR MY SHAYLA! MY SHAYLA IS FREE!'
And most beautiful of all is what happens moments later after I reopen the game. I have a random uma set to appear on the home screen, and of all the ones to appear, it's my Shayla moved to tears that I've worked so hard for her. You're free, Tickezo. It's time to win the Derby.
Discord messages that read 'Oh my god I logged back into the game and this is the first thing I see. Random Umamusume on the home screen btw. She's my babygirl and she's free now.' Attached is an image of Winning Ticket on the home screen saying 'Sniffle... You're still working this late, all for my sake? Thanks so much, Traineeer!'
Discord message saying 'LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!' Attached is a screen capture from chapter 3 of the main story of a Totally Unknown Character saying 'Waaaah! I'm gonna CRY!' in the middle of a library.
I'd sum up what happened after Main Story chapter 3, but I wrote a manifesto on Bluesky right after it happened. Tl;dr it means the world to me to see someone who can be "too much" achieving their dreams as someone incapable of shutting up myself. bsky.app/profile/callme
So now I'm officially hooked. I start winning careers on the regular and move on to Champion's Meets. I start doing research on how to get good. After finding out I can simply borrow MLB Kitasan Black, I win the Cancer Cup! It's Group B of Open League but a win is a win!
My Cancer Cup team, The Poopshitters! Featuring Vodka, El Condor Pasa and Sakura Bakushin O AKA the Seiun Skiolator!
And then from there it just spirals out of control. I live, breathe, eat, sleep Umamusume. I buy a charm of Vodka at a Smash regional while cosplaying as Vodka. Nobody who saw me buy the Playboy bunny ears knew I was using them to cosplay an anime horsegirl, which is even worse.
Selfie with an adorable Vodka acrylic charm by @Onua_tf! My face is censored for privacy but also because I'm a godawful clocky brickhon sneed who can't even cosplay a relatively masculine girl right.
Through this, I start to realize something about Umamusume. I start to realize I love Umamusume so much I don't know if I've ever truly loved anything before. Was it all out of obligation? Hell, I was so bitter and spiteful in the past and constantly poo-poo'd at fandom culture.
Umamusume really did teach me to love. It reaffirmed my beliefs that being open and passionate can get you places and encouraged me to give everything a fair shake. I would have never thought anime horsegirl gambling would mean so much to me; who knows what else that applies to?
The rest, as they say, is history. It's a whirlwind, a horse tornado. I join a Discord and watch Museum Mile, one of those weird looking creatures based on Umamusume, clutch the 2025 Arima Kinen. I do some dumbass fanart that has no bearing on my name. I win bigger and better CMs
Drawing of a noodly creature with vaguely Katsuragi Ace-like hair raising up its arms and going GRAAAH! Very large text to its left side reads 'THIS IS KRANGUS ASS.' Now you know.
Winning 1st place in Graded League Group B in the Scorpio Cup. My team is the soulful oshi squadron of Summer Maruzensky, Oguri Cap and El Condor Pasa.
Winning 1st place in Graded League Group B in the Capricorn Cup. My team was Sakura Bakushin O, Taiki Shuttle and Summer Maruzensky.
Winning 1st place in Graded League Group B in the Gemini Cup with the team of Valentine's Day Mihono Bourbon, Narita Taishin, and oshi pick Agnes Digital!
Also remember what happened with Winning Ticket? It happened again but with Agnes Digital. Aside from being the funniest character in the game, her career hit me in a really personal spot. I feel like I knew an Agnes Digital in a parallel universe. Also she likes ass #swag
Discord infodump on my thoughts on Agnes Digital. She actually did beat Narita Taishin for top 2 and is very close to topping Winning Ticket for my favorite uma.
The horsegirls even brought me out to the cinema, and I am not a movie guy. The worldwide premiere of Beginning of a New Era was too much for me to resist. I woke up with a BOANEr and went to bed wanting to be a light for everyone around me. bsky.app/profile/callme
And now we're here. My new home is a Discord server based on the Star Blossom manga. We yap about the Dodent and it's awesome. They call me the real life version of a super butch side character who appears for three chapters and disappears into the mountains. Shoutouts Pixloen
Looking back, I might still be kicking because of Umamusume. It seems like such a silly thing to say and I wouldn't have believed it even after my first day with the game. It's given me some very welcome reminders and some strong ideals to strive toward.
Obviously it's not 100% realistic. I personally think me succeeding and inspiring people while being as loud and obnoxious as I am is every bit as realistic as girls with horse ears. But that's what ideals are for, right? So I'll keep running even if I don't know the way out.
Even if I still wrangle with it, I do think a lot of my passion is intact and I should be putting in the hard work to pursue it. Hell, the Uma soundtrack makes me want to try writing standalone songs with lyrics instead of just doing soundtracks all day. Couldn't hurt, right?
The views of others have nuked my spirit for almost three solid decades, but what matters is the desire to create, move and inspire is that of my own. Nobody can take that from me and if I can die doing that then I'll die happy. So let's keep running aimlessly and see where we go
Capping off with the song that always reminds me of my early days with Umamusume. The baby steps through the URA Finale, unlocking all the trophies and concerts, things that seem so menial now but were so special back then. God bless Umamusume. Amen. youtube.com/watch?v=bdaT9E
