Youth unemployment is the highest it’s been for almost 40 years!! This law change is cruel and evil. Young people aren’t choosing to be jobless and their parents likely can’t afford to pay for their transport to interviews let alone food, rent and bills. Thread 👇🏼

From November (same week as the election) the government will cut benefits completely for those under 20, and require their parents to pay their living costs. So if your parents combined total income (before tax) is below the $67,225 income limit.
(The median wage for ONE PERSON in NZ is $69,000.) If you have two parents on the minimum wage ($50,000) you’re way over that threshold. This covers nearly every household in New Zealand with adult children.
If your adult child 18-20 can’t find work, or has lost their job did you know from November 1st you will now be completely covering their costs?
The government have systematically made the economy worse, there are far less jobs available for under 20’s than any time in my entire life and this is their plan… cut people off completely? This will affect tens of thousands of families. This is ugly stuff.
This will no doubt end up affecting crime, mental health and the youth suicide rate which is already the second worst in the OECD. Lithuania is the worst and we are second.
