Mecklenburg County Manager Mike Bryant sent the following message to county employees:
I want to make you aware of a concerning situation involving employee payroll information and attempted paycheck diversion. I am sharing this information out of an abundance of caution so that everyone can remain vigilant while we work to understand and address the situation.
We have identified suspicious activity involving an individual contacting HR under the pretense of needing assistance regaining access to an account. The individual appears to be using untraceable phone numbers and appears to know our operations and even names of employees.
I am taking this matter seriously and an alert has been activated with appropriate teams actively investigating to determine its scope and take steps to prevent further attempts. While we continue those efforts, I believe it’s important to communicate with you promptly and transparently. I encourage everyone to take a few precautionary steps:
Verify your payroll information to ensure your banking and direct deposit details are accurate and have not been changed without your authorization.
Review your financial accounts for any unexpected changes or suspicious activity.
Protect your account credentials and remain cautious of unexpected requests for passwords, account information or personal information.
Report anything unusual immediately to HR and IT (for example, unexpectedly receiving a paper check instead of a direct deposit or not receiving a deposit when expected).
We are still working to establish the full picture. I do not want to create unnecessary concern, but I do believe you deserve to be informed so you can take reasonable steps to protect your personal information and financial security. More information will be coming in tomorrow's EmployeeNewsNow (ENN) about additional security upgrades and ways you can keep your information secure.
